About CTEC

The Canadian Theatre Educators’ Conference (CTEC) was founded in 2017 by Neil Silcox out of a desire to learn from , and share with, other theatre teachers.

It is our belief that great theatre artists need to be nurtured throughout their lives: from dance classes when they’re just old enough to walk, to youth theatre programs in their childhood and adolescence, through their college or university training, and into a lifetime of weekend workshops and evening classes with independent artist-educators. CTEC welcomes anyone and everyone who is working to create great theatre artists at any age and in any discipline: actors, designers, directors, technicians, and more.

CTEC strives to create a community of educators who can work together to ensure the safety and wellbeing of theatre students across Canada.

What we do

Conferences — CTEC hosts intimate in-person conferences every other year. Over two days, teachers come together to share lectures, lead discussion groups, and to take part in mock lessons where we get to experience our talented colleagues practicing their pedagogy. These conferences are small enough that we can all be a part of one conversation and can have a shared experience of the weekend.

Online Discussions — starting in 2020 CTEC has hosted a number of online discussions, symposia, and lectures. These events offer the opportunity to share our struggles, our burning questions, and our great ideas with teachers from coast to coast. During the school year these are continuing with our drop-in Monday Night Tea Times

Resources — CTEC has also started curating a set of resources for teachers. These include recordings of online and in-person events, tools and essays by members of the CTEC community, and links to resources provided by outside people and organizations.
